Former NFL star Aaron Hernandez was found hanged in his Massachusetts prison cell Wednesday morning, officials have said.
Hernandez took his life just days after a Massachusetts court acquitted him in a double murder case.
The former tight-end hanged himself with a bedsheet which was attached to a window cell. His body was discovered at around 3.05 am at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, according to the Massachusetts Department of Correction.
“Lifesaving techniques were attempted on Mr. Hernandez, and he was transported to UMass Leominster, where he was pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m.,” read a statement by the correction department.
Before hanging himself, Hernandez tried to block the door to the cell in a general population wing where he was living in solitary with various items.
The Massachusetts State Police are investigating his death. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death, the Worcester County district attorney’s office said.
At the time of his death, Hernandez was serving a life sentence after his conviction in the murder of Odin Lloyd in 2013.
Lloyd’s gunshot-riddled body was discovered by a jogger in a Massachusetts industrial park close to Hernandez’s home on June 17, 2013.
Nine days later, Hernandez was charged in connection with the murder. His former team the New England Pa nine days later, and the Patriots released him.
