Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka broke the news of the death of Senator Mutula Kilonzo at a funeral in Kitui.
It was after this announcement that many reporters and bloggers picked up the news and it spread on social media. Some Kenyan reporters were skeptical of the news even though it came from Kalonzo and waited for a while to confirm the breaking news.
By the time Kalonzo announced the news, he had already spoken to Mutula Kilonzo’s wife who confirmed the news to him personally.
As he was seated at the burial ceremony of Mrs Grace Syokwaa Kavali in Tseikuru location, Mwingi North, he received the news about the Makueni senator’s death. After composing himself, he stood up to announce the news to mourners.
“I have just received the news of the sudden death of my friend (Mutual Kilonzo) as I sat here. It is very devastating moment. I have just talked to the widow who confirmed the sad news. It really…”ouch my God…,” he said before he broke down crying uncontrollably.
A section of the mourners screamed and wept loudly after the announcement.
As Kalonzo wept uncontrollably, three MPs who were also present went to his side to console him. The MPs were Francis Nyenze (Kitui West), Patrick Makau (Mavoko), MPs Joe Mutambu (Mwingi Central)
Addressing the mourners, Mwingi North MP John Munuve sent his condolences to the Mutula family and called for calm until investigations into his death were complete. He warned Kenyans to desist from speculation.
