Mountains of trash disappear in Nairobi as Sonko gets to work

Nairobi Governor-elect Mike Sonko has hit the ground running barely a week after he was declared as the winner in the last general election.

The Governor-elect has initiated a cleaning exercise of Nairobi with tangible results already being witnessed by residents.

On Tuesday, Sonko initiated a major cleaning exercise at Wakulima Market and within a day, the mountains of trash had disappeared. The overpowering stench that lingered around the area is said to be slowly disappearing as the crew works its way around.

The incoming Governor pledged that garbage will be collected daily around the market.

Mr Sonko has pledged to make the market sparkling clean and thereafter lay cabro blocks  and pave the streets. Mr Sonko also intends to have little bins installed every 30 meters.

Other initiatives that have been lined up include planting trees as well as installing street lights.

On Monday, Mr Sonko rejected Sh25million budget set aside for his inauguration ceremony. He instead directed that the funds be used to clear salary arrears owed to county employees.
