Sonko rejects Sh25m inauguration, directs money used to pay staff salary arrears

Mike Sonko has rejected the Sh25 million that had been set aside for his inauguration ceremony as Nairobi Governor and instead directing that staff salaries arrears be cleared.

Sonko ordered the money to be paid to the workers within 48 hours which would clear the one month arrears owed to County employees.

Sonko beat out incumbent Governor Evans Kidero of ODM in the just concluded general elections held on August 8th.

Following his victory, the Assumption of Office Committee allocated the funds for his inauguration.

“We had a fruitful meeting with Kenya County Government Workers Union (KCGWU) and agreed workers must be paid before I assume office,” he said.

Included in the funds set aside by the committee included Sh11.1 million for the swearing in ceremony, Sh2.4 million for fuel of VIP cars, Sh6.3 million for security, Sh2.7 million for works and Sh2 million for briefing and documentation. The amount also included Sh384,900 for public health.

Sonko also said that about 1,000 Nairobi youths will be contracted to remove posters of candidates who were vying for various positions in the just concluded elections.
