Susan Njeri Kariuki the founder of Karisan Media based in Dallas Texas passed away on Friday after a short illness at a Dallas area hospital.

Ms Kariuki passed on after going into Acute Respiratory distress and was also battling pneumonia related complications at the Texas Presbyterian Hospital in Plano, a suburb of Dallas.

According to the hospital, Ms Kariuki also had a serious bacterial infection in her blood stream which further complicated her health.

According to family sources who spoke to jambonewspot.com, Ms Kariuki went to Methodist Hospital near Carrollton Texas for a checkup. The medical staff at the doctor realized that she needed further medical attention and transferred her to Texas Presbyterian where she was admitted.

On Wednesday she was responding well to treatment and spent the day talking to her Mum who was in New Jersey and her siblings in Kenya.

On Thursday however, when she was talking to her mum, she was coughing a lot and while they were still on the phone, she went into respiratory shock and passed out. Her mum tried calling back several times and eventually a nurse answered and relayed Njeri’s condition to her.

She however stabilized but doctors said she had severe pneumonia and had excessive fluids in her lungs.

They were able to drain the fluids but her condition did not significantly improve.

During this time, her cousin Grace Waigwa had been checking up on her and relaying her status to her mum. She stayed by her side most of the time.

On Friday morning when Ms Waigwa went to check on her, the doctors informed her that Ms Kariuki’s chances of survival were 50-50. They actually doubted she would make it to 6pm on that day.

The doctor said that Ms Kariuki had developed sepsis which is a life-threatening illness caused by the body’s response to an infection in the bloodstream. The response by the body to fight the infection causes damage to the body’s own organs and tissues.

Ms Kariuki’s kidneys failed and eventually shut down.

Ms Waigwa informed Ms Kariuki’s mum and also called a few friends to be with her.

At this point, she had been coding every two hours. Coding is a medical term used when a patient experiences a life threatening event that requires intervention by paramedics or emergency response personnel.

Ms Kariuki eventually passed on in the early afternoon.

Kenyans across social media expressed shock and dismay after the news broke with many noting her contributions to the community.

Many expressed disbelief as they had interacted with her during the Face of Kenya USA event held in Dallas on Saturday.
