Trump demands Congress terminate Green Card diversity visa immigration lottery

President Donald Trump has said he wants to Congress to terminate the Diversity Visa Lottery, a program that brings immigrants to the US from countries with low rate of immigration to the country.

President Trump made the remarks during a White House Cabinet meeting Wednesday saying that it has not been good for the country.

“I am, today, starting the process of terminating the diversity lottery program,” Trump said. “I am going to ask Congress to immediately initiate work to get rid of this program, diversity lottery, diversity lottery. Sounds nice, it is not nice, it is not good. It hasn’t been good and we have been against it.”

He added that he was in favor of a merit based system and not this “chain migration.”

His remarks come on the heels of a terror attack in New York on Tuesday which is believed to have been carried out by a legal permanent resident of the US.

The suspected attacker, Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov entered the country through the Diversity Visa program

“The terrorist came into our country through what is called the ‘Diversity Visa Lottery Program,’ a Chuck Schumer beauty,” Trump tweeted. “I want merit based.”

Trump was referencing Schumer for his role in the 1990 legislation that created the program.

Two Republican Sens. Tom Cotton and David Perdue have introduced a bill, which the President endorses which would eliminate the program and other family based immigration categories and then would transform the remaining employment-based visas into a point system that favors heavily highly skilled, highly educated, English-speaking immigrants.
