Kenyan Woman in Maine Sentenced for Role in Marriage Fraud Ring

A Kenyan woman, convicted for her role in a major multi-state marriage fraud ring, was sentenced Tuesday to one year in prison. 30-year-old Margaret Kimani, formerly of Massachusetts, was one of 28 defendants from Maine convicted for their participation in a scam that paid American citizens to marry African immigrants so they could become legal citizens. A press conference at the U.S. attorney’s office in Bangor marked the end to an investigation that began in 2005. Edwin Mbugua told his attorney he lived with the alleged victim for four years and can’t understand why she won’t see him. The alleged victim told prosecutors she and Mbugua move in the same circles, but said she never dated the 26-year-old Kenyan native and never lived with him. “The defendant says he is love with the victim,” prosecutor Christine Maltby said during Mbugua’s arraignment Monday in Lowell District Court. “But she has no idea why he is targeting her,” Maltby said. Drama unfolded at Kamukunji Police Station on Wednesday evening after officers refused to keep Sh1 million donated by President Kenyatta to victims of the fire that gutted stalls at Gikomba second hand clothes market.
