Violence marred ODM nominations in Homa Bay county on Monday claiming the life of a bodyguard attached to Mbita MP Millie Odhiambo.
As chaos erupted during the nomination process in Urianda Primary School, Lambwe ward, Mr Kennedy Okore,37, was run over by a vehicle sustaining serious injuries before succumbing at Ongogo sub county hospital in Mbita.
The melee was caused by a clash between Millie’s supporters and those of her opponent James Akali.
The group supporting Millie claimed that they were being blocked from entering the polling station in an apparent bid to intimidate and prevent them from voting.
“I got several phone calls that my supporters were being deterred from entering the polling station. I rushed to check but when I reached the armed goons confronted and began hurling stones on us,” Millie said.
Akali on the other hand said he smelt mischief from Millie whom he said had sensed defeat and was not perpetrating the accusations that his supporters were violent.
“Millie is looking for sympathy votes after sensing defeat. She is fond of accusing me for no reasons,” Akali said.
He said that he was not in the area when the incident occurred and was in Mbita.
Millie recorded a statement at Homa Bay Police station and the incident is under police investigations.
